Lunch with a legend, Kinsey, & Common Core

[April 2019 update:] Over the past few months, crazy headlines and circumstances in my life have caused me to dig out this post and revisit the content. A lot has changed in the past 4 years since I wrote it. Before you read, I need you to know a few things: First, a good portion of… Read More Lunch with a legend, Kinsey, & Common Core

3 days running

You might be a mama if … You have been wearing (and sleeping in) your gym clothes for three days straight, but still haven’t made it to the gym. That was me this morning. Have I cleaned the house? Check! Been to the grocery store? Check! Made it to a cub scout meeting? Check! Run… Read More 3 days running

Mini Meteorologists

We had a snow day today–which, in VA, is a bit of a novelty. My youngest, almost four, was cracking me up talking about it. “Um … I think it was just a flurry, Mom,” my little scoundrel said knowingly as we walked out the door this morning. He was right. It was really only… Read More Mini Meteorologists

Burning ramen

I once read a comment from a female corporate executive who had become addicted to ‘Mommy Blogs.’ “Everything looks so beautiful and wonderful all the time,” she said. And then the kicker: “I WISH I COULD STAY HOME AND ARRANGE FLOWERS ALL DAY.” Bahahahahaaaaa! Well … If you read my stuff you know I like to… Read More Burning ramen

Fall awakening

Each year, as the leaves begin to glow, my skin prickles. For many, autumn is a melancholy time–a reminder of the long sleepy winter pending on the horizon. It was once for me, too. But now I anticipate Fall as much as springtime. For me, autumn is not the end, it is the beginning. Two… Read More Fall awakening

The mystery that is Motherhood

For some women, it comes so naturally. Like my mother. All her life, she wanted little ones. She married young, is a natural nurturer, adores her own mother. And nearly ten months after her wedding day, a shrill cry broke the air and I came along. These days, you’ll find her playing on the floor with trash… Read More The mystery that is Motherhood

Making the grade

Hey, mamas. Have you ever had someone walk into your house and ask the big question: “What have you been doing all day?” Ugh. Whenever this happens, I find myself scrambling for some sort of neat checklist to deliver so that I can get an A+ in motherhood. Not only that, but often during my run-of-the-mill… Read More Making the grade

Dishes, Digital, and Withdrawal

The other day, while helping me with the dishes, my 3-year-old announced: “Hey mom! Look, my finger is taking a shower!” It’s the little things. In the midst of all the rush, the “efficiency” of multitasking (which actually means we never really focus on one thing at a time), the bustle, the noise, the beeps… Read More Dishes, Digital, and Withdrawal

We all have our battles and I've had my fair share. But if I can make it through this madness (addiction, divorce, abuse, single parenting, co-parenting, molestation, infertility, autoimmune disease, connective tissue disorders ... you name it, I've been there), then you can too. You are stronger than you think!

Slowly but surely, we can convert these experiences into FUEL for better things ahead. We can teach our kids. We can inspire those around us for good. And we can change the world.
